MARC CHAGALL (1897-1985) Russian-Jewish painter is recognized as one of the most significant painters and graphic artists of his time. Chagall painted in a style all his own, combining elements of Expressionism, Symbolism, Cubism and, to a lesser degree, other Modernist art movements. His works combine recollection with folklore and fantasy. A prolific and multi-faceted artist, Chagall left behind him thousands of works in many different techniques and media that have established him as one of the foremost artists of the 20th Century.

About Derrière le Miroir (Behind the Mirror):

Derrière le Miroir (DLM) was an art portfolio booklet published between 1946 and 1982 by the French publisher and gallery owner Aimé Maeght. There were a total of 253 portfolios published in edition sizes of 200. The portfolio, itself designed as an art object presented in a large (15” x 11”) format, is illustrated with original Lithographs. Most of the major artists of the second half of the twentieth century created Lithographs for DLM: Léger, Miro, Calder, TapiesChillida, Braque, Matisse, Giacometti, and above all Chagall. Poets and writers like Aragon, Beckett, Char, EluardPrévertQueneauReverdySartre, contributed with unpublished texts.

The Lithographs are so beautifully printed that collectors today have them mounted, framed and hung as artwork.
